Fresh Water Aquaculture Section

This Section will perform the following activities:

(i)           Promote freshwater aquaculture development in potential areas;

(ii)          Coordinate and provide mechanisms for stocking or restocking of open water bodies including irrigation programmes;

(iii)        Promote expansion of viable freshwater aquaculture technologies appropriate for small, medium and large scale;

(iv)        Collaborate and liaise with national, regional and international organizations involved in freshwater aquaculture development;

(v)         Promote culture of suitable and high-valued species/stain for commercial freshwater aquaculture;

(vi)        Initiate and implement FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Aquaculture to provide guideline to address environmental and social issues;

(vii)      Coordinate, monitor and evaluate the production and distribution of quality seeds and fish feeds;

(viii)     Coordinate risk assessment, prevent entry of exotic species and Genetic Modified Organisms (GMOs);

(ix)        Prepare guidelines for aqua-farms; hatchery and nursery management; and

(x)         Promote the involvement of private sector and civil societies in aquaculture.

This Section will be led by an Assistant Director.
